Product Description
This best-selling resource provides a general overview and basic information for all adult intensive care units. The material is presented in a brief and quick-access format which allows for topic and exam review. It provides enough detailed and specific information to address most all questions and problems that arise in the ICU. Emphasis on fundamental principles in the text should prove useful for patient care outside the ICU as well. New chapters in this edition include hyperthermia and hypothermia syndromes; infection control in the ICU; and severe airflow obstruction. Sections have been reorganized and consolidated when appropriate to reinforce concepts. Purchase of The ICU Book, Third Edition gives you free access to a Website featuring links from references to PubMed, updated regularly; and a directory of Websites handpicked by Dr. Marino.

Excellent resource for critical care December 30, 2009 Ben S. I would highly recommend this for almost any medical professional who will have contact with critically ill patients. Came in very handy during my ICU rotations in medical school, and I will certainly refer to it throughout surgery residency and possibly fellowship. One of the gold standard texts in critical care, you can't go wrong on rounds when you say you read it in The ICU Book!
Excellent book December 8, 2009 Dr VVV A good read. Just enough physiology to help you understand but not get you overwhelmed. An excellent review for seasoned attendings and residents alike
All the information you may need, just hard to work through November 24, 2009 Julie A. Rizzo 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book has excellent basic principles/formulas outlined for the critical care world. However, it is not well-written, it is a very difficult read and the references at the end of the chapters are not the most helpful ones. If you can get through this book though, you should be able to know a good bit of intensive care medicine (both on the medical and surgical side). There are better reads for critical care out there though!
Highly Readable October 27, 2009 Blusuede (NYC, NY USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
What marks this book apart from peers in its field is its readable nature. Believe it or not -- and I was surprised myself by this -- I virtually finished this 1000 page behemoth off in a week's intensive reading. I have never done that with any textbook on any subject. Marino brings his subject matter down to earth and uses wit and style to cut through jargon that marks most other ICU texts. Notably, I think this book should be read by generalists in internal medicine as well as ICU specialists as its clinical pearls and at times iconoclastic views of matters are needed in all medical wards, not just in critical care units.
The ICU book review October 21, 2009 Michael G. Abraham (Milwaukee, WI) This book has been very helpful. It is very thorough and explains things very nicely. Would recommend it to any intern, resident, or fellow working in an ICU setting.
