Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Originally published in 1904 this extremely scarce early work on the Whippet is both expensive and hard to find in this edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and illustrations as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. Freeman Lloyd was an expert on dogs and wrote several books on various breeds. This book on the whippet was his best, and is much sought after by true "whippeters." As a respected member of the National Whippet-Racing Club, he wrote from his wealth of experience of this wonderful little racing/hunting dog. The book consists of over a hundred pages divided into sixteen detailed chapters and is illustrated with vintage photos of typical dogs and diagrams of tracks, including an additional gallery of photos at the rear. Contents Include: Make, Shape and Characteristics. Breeding. The Whippet as a Snap-Dog. As a Race-Dog. As a Sporting Dog. As a Show Dog. As a Companion. Training. Tracks and Racecourses. Racing Rules. Management of Meetings. Tables of Times, Distances and Weights. The Rules of Handicapping. Kennels. Food and Clothing. Diseases. This is a fascinating read for any whippet enthusiast or historian of the breed, but also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

2 out of 5 stars File under: What was I thinking?   October 18, 2007

Okay, I just bought a whippet and thought I would read up on this great breed of dog. I bought the more current books but also bought this one. The following is not to criticize the book but just warn you what you get. In retrospect, I should have known better.

This book is about 100 years old which makes it sort of cool to think about, but the information in there is old and not applicable to dog ownership today. I am certain if I, Mugsy, and Butch were interested in hanging out at the docks and making some money by racing our dogs, there would be some benefit of reading this book, but really, suggestions like giving them cod liver oil and the like are a little antiquated by now.

Who might like this book? Well, someone who does like reading older literature. Also someone who has to have all that is written about this type of dog and "needs" this book for their collection. As for me, my life continues to be a cautionary tale for others not to follow. Save your 20 dollars on this thin and tiny book and do something - anything else with it.
